St. Joseph Parish in Bloomfield usually holds, at most, about 1,000 people.

Police line the streets at the private funeral for Paul Sciullo II.

But so many wanted to say goodbye to Pittsburgh Police Officer Paul Sciullo II that they literally packed the church on Liberty Avenue for his funeral Mass Wednesday.

Some squeezed against the door. Others who couldn't fit inside lined the streets, where bagpipes were played as the casket was carried out of a hearse and into the church.

"My Uncle Paul was the best uncle in the world. I remember his smiles that lit up the whole world," said Sciullo's young niece, Anna Zahren.

The Rev. John Dinello, a speaker at the service, called Sciullo "a courageous son" and "a good and loving brother."

Sciullo, 36, was shot to death while responding to a domestic call Saturday in Stanton Heights. Also killed were Officers Stephen Mayhle and Eric Kelly.

"He's been a shining light in our midst. Thank you for lighting that way for us, Paul, and showing us all how to live in God's love," said Dinello.

"I'm sad. It's such a horrible loss -- men doing their duty trying to protect everybody," said Sciullo's friend, Don Miller.

"We have to pray for him and let God know the best man in the whole world is coming to his kingdom in Heaven," said Zahren. "So Uncle Paul, if you are listening, be my guardian angel and guide me forever and ever. Thank you."

After the service, Sciullo's body was taken downtown to the City-County Building to lie in repose alongside Kelly and Mayhle. (Story, Video)
