The United States Honor Flag was flown to Pittsburgh Wednesday to be displayed at the City-County Building downtown, where three fallen police officers lie in repose.

The flag arrived at Pittsburgh International Airport on an American Airlines flight from Miami at about 1:30 p.m.

Pilot Jeroen van Wagenberg delivered the flag in a black briefcase to married Pittsburgh Police Officers Evan and Patricia Melendez, who were waiting for it at the Allegheny County Police station in the airport.

With a police escort, the Melendezes drove the flag to the City-County Building and raised it in honor of Officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo II.

The public is encouraged to pay respects at the City-County Building from 4 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday, when the process of moving the caskets to the Petersen Events Center for a memorial service will begin.

Kelly, Mayhle and Sciullo were shot to death while responding to a domestic call Saturday in Stanton Heights. The suspect, 22-year-old Richard Poplawski, is being held in the county jail on homicide charges.

When the Honor Flag is at rest, it's kept at the Miami-Dade Police Department.
