Officer Eric Kelly didn't have to respond to a domestic dispute call Saturday morning in Stanton Heights Saturday morning, but he did so because of the dangers he knew his fellow officers could face.

Pittsburgh police detective Sheila Jeffries was not surprised her friend and neighbor rushed to aid his fellow officers.

"He was just a great guy. For him to back up those officers, truly speaks for the person. He could have easily had just gone home, but that's the type of guy he was," said Jeffries.

Kelly, 41, a 14-year veteran of the force, was on his way home after his overnight shift ended.

Jeffries was at the scene on Fairfield Street where Kelly, along with officers Stephen Mayhle, 29, and Paul Sciullo II, 36, were shot and killed.

Kelly lived on the same street as Jeffries, not far from where the shooting took place.

Jeffries described Kelly as a family man who was proud of his three daughters, talking about them often.

She said losing Kelly was a loss to not only his family and friends, but the entire city of Pittsburgh.

Kelly is survived by his wife, three daughters, mother and sister.
