INDIANA, Pa. -- The Indiana County coroner said Thursday the death of an 18-year-old Indiana University of Pennsylvania student was likely caused by drugs and alcohol.
Watch Sheldon's ReportBrenton Croll, of Blair County, was found by a friend in the Lawrence Hall dormitory around noon on Wednesday, the Indiana County coroner said. Croll was pronounced dead at about 1 p.m.
The coroner's initial news release said Croll, a freshman nursing student from Roaring Spring, Blair County, had been drinking heavily the night before he died.
On Thursday morning, coroner Mike Baker said in a news release that it appears Croll died as a result of a combination of prescription drugs and alcohol.
Channel 4 Action News reporter Sheldon Ingram spoke with IUP students who said alcohol was abundant on campus for St. Patrick's Day.
"I just heard that a bunch of kids were mixing alcohol with the drugs and that's crazy because that's a lethal combination," said student Josh Smith.
Investigators said Croll apparently went to the room of some friends for the night. When one of the friends returned from class and couldn't wake him up, he called for help.
Baker withheld a final ruling on the cause of death until he gets the results of further tests. Baker said no foul play is suspected.
Student Marquis Thornton was friends with Croll but was not with him Tuesday night.
Thornton said he heard from friends that Croll mixed alcohol and drugs that night.
"I feel bad for his family. I hope nobody makes the same mistake he does," said Thornton.
The University has spent more than $300,000 creating the President's Commission on Reducing Student Substance Abuse, targeting prevention, education, intervention and enforcement.
"We're trying to educate our students on the dangers of alcohol and we tell them underage is unacceptable," said Michelle Fryling, director of media relations at the university.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Leflie-Miller Funeral Home in Claysburg.
