A Washington County grandmother suffered lower body injuries while trying to escape from a house fire that killed 10 show dogs Sunday night.

Dorothy Digby, 67, cut her legs while trying to flee a burning home on Dry Ridge Road in Donegal Township. She is expected to be OK.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 6 p.m. and weren't sure if anybody was trapped inside.

“Upon arrival, we found the basement level of the structure fully involved. We found out that the possibly-entrapped person was not at home,” West Alexander Fire Chief Eric Graham said.

The grandson who fire crews thought might be inside was visiting a friend at the time.

Digby shares the home with her granddaughter, who was attending a dog show in New York when the fire occurred.
