Bellevue Pipe Bursts; Sewage Spills Into HomesHome Has 3 Feet Of Sewage In Basement After SpillPOSTED: 12:33 pm EST January 7,
2009 BELLEVUE, Pa. -- A 120-year-old sewage pipe between Bellevue and Avalon keeps fracturing and the recent rain is making the problem worse. The sewer lines for several homes are backed up and one man told Channel 4 Action News' Ari Hait that 3 feet of sewage in his basement had to be pumped out.Crews have been working on the 10-inch line for two weeks, but on Wednesday, the line ruptured and caused flooding along South Starr Avenue. The road remained closed until 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Avalon Borough manager said part of the problem is whenever they fix one part of the line, the pipe just ruptures somewhere else.Gary Phillips is one of the residents affected by the sewage spill. He said the flooding has destroyed everything in his basement, including the furnace."We lost heat and hot water and heat on the 19th, which would be Saturday. So I stayed in the house without heat or hot water for two days on the 19th and 20th. I finally had to abandon the house on the 22nd and move out," Phillips said. Basically, we're homeless. We have no idea when we're going to be back in here."Phillips hired his own plumber to look into his own lines. That was when he discovered the problems started off of his property."When he started digging, he got this huge gush of water, it was literally like a fountain," said Phillips.Fellow resident Joe Golubski said he hopes the problem gets taken care of ASAP."It's just the house is getting worse and worse every day. Once the mold starts growing, the house is going to need condemned," said Golubski. Golubski said he wasn't living in the house, but was hoping to sell it.That could be difficult considering what's in the basement."I've also had solid waste after the water drained out and then today I had another three feet of raw sewage in my basement," said Golubski. The Avalon Borough manager told Hait they've given up trying to repair the old pipe. Instead crews will pull the old pipe out and replace it with a new one.One homeowner told Hait that estimates for damages on his property are upwards of $35,000 to $40,000. Since Avalon and Bellevue share sewer lines, municipal leaders said it will likely be decided by the courts as to who pays for the damages, Hait reported.
