PITTSBURGH -- A severely beaten 19-month-old boy died from blunt-force trauma to the head, the medical examiner ruled Sunday.

Leonard McIntire had been on life support since he was attacked by his mother's boyfriend on Oct. 27, authorities said. An autopsy was completed Sunday.

Police said Joshua Turner, 19, attacked the child inside a home on Main Street in Burrell Township. The boy, known as LJ, was punched, bitten and shaken by Turner, police said.

The child's mother, Kimberly Shirley, 20, told WTAE Channel 4's Marcie Cipriani that she wasn't home when the injuries happened.

Turner remains in the Indiana County Jail.
