Police are trying to track down the person who stole thousands of dollars from a group of high school students

According to police, the money was stolen from a safe inside the Penn Hills school administration building. Investigators said several people had access to the safe and there were no signs of forced entry.

The money was raised to help pay for various activities including prom and yearbook costs.

Last week, someone noticed about $5,000 of that cash vanished.

"I think it's pretty crazy that people would want to steal money from a school that fundraised. And it's not worth it and why would you want to steal money that people raised. It's not like money grows on trees these days," said student Staci Morgan.

The funds were reported missing on Friday.

Investigators said the school district is cooperating with the investigation. When asked for comment, the school district said, "W0e can acknowledge there is missing money but we cannot comment any further or provide additional details because the matter is under investigation by police."

Students like Stacy Thrall said she was shocked anyone would steal money that would go to help the teens.

"I hope that he's caught, that we have some fundraiser to try to get it back," Thrall said.

"They should take back the money that they took, that's screwing us over. That's less stuff we can do," said Lizzy Fennel, another student.

Penn Hills police said they are currently in the process of interviewing those who had access to the safe. They are asking anyone who may have any information about the missing money to call the department.
