Suspect In Fatal Gas Station Shooting SurrendersPolice Say Family Encouraged Man To Come ForwardPOSTED: 11:26 pm EDT September 26,
2008 PITTSBURGH -- Police said there was a major break Friday in the fatal shooting of a man who was killed while filling up his car at a local gas station. The suspect, whom police said they accuse of blasting the victim's SUV at point-blank range, suddenly turned himself in.Police said the suspect's own family brought him to the police station, where he surrendered at about 5:45 p.m. Friday.A silent Jesse Engram was escorted out of Pittsburgh police headquarters after he was brought in for questioning.Officers said they had been searching for the 19-year-old from East Liberty for the past few days in connection with the shooting death of Korey Johnson. Johnson, 20, was killed inside his purple GMC Yukon while at the A-Plus Gas Station in the 7700 block of Penn Avenue Monday night. The driver's side of the SUV was shot out. Port authority police said they tried to chase the suspect but he got away. Investigators said they believe the shooting was tied to a gunfight earlier in the year in Wilkinsburg. When shots were fired at a clothing store in April, police said they think Johnson was the intended target that day -- but instead 12-year-old Kholen Germany ended up dead after he was caught in the crossfire.City homicide detectives, along with the deputies at the Allegheny Sheriff's Department, said they have been working with Engram's family to encourage him to come forward. The sheriff's deputies said they turned him over to the Pittsburgh police major crimes unit.Engram was arraigned Friday evening at the Pittsburgh Municipal Courts Building.
