Allegheny County sheriff's deputies found 14 pit bulls and a submachine gun on Thursday in a home on Lawndale Street in Penn Hills. (Map)

The deputies were executing a foreclosure warrant on what appeared to be a vacant home when they found the animals and the weapon.

"These dogs were screaming in pain inside. That's what alerted me to look around the back of the home and see where these dogs are. They were being tied down with tow chains, and little pups had tow chains around them. It was an awful scene," said Deputy John Petrucci, one of the officers who discovered the animals inside the home.

Many of the dogs had injuries and scars and fur missing, and officers are investigating whether the animals may have been used in a dogfighting ring.

"There's obvious evidence that (one) dog was used in some kind of fighting, or has been in a fight. There's bite marks, fur missing," said Detective Richard Manning, of the sheriff's office.

Detectives and officers from Animal Friends removed the dogs from the home and took them for emergency veterinary care.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to arrests and convictions in the case.
