2008 PITTSBURGH -- For the first time since 1980, a new library is set to open in Pittsburgh.The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will open a new $3.15 million facility in the Hill District at the end of October.Located at the intersection of Centre Avenue and Kirkpatrick Street, the library will aim to encouraging today’s young minds.“Continued investment is one of the things that we’re trying to encourage,” said Evan Frazier of the Hill House Association. “This new library is so significant, particularly the location that it’s in. It’s right in the heart of the community.”The facility will also honor one of Pittsburgh’s most famous sons.Playwright August Wilson, a Hill District native, used to hang out at a restaurant that was once located next to the new site.Wilson represents a testament to the life changing power of the library.“He was here at the 100th anniversary of the library in the Hill District with his paper library card,” said Barbara Mistick of the Carnegie Library. “He said it was the most valuable item he ever acquired – a gateway to knowledge. It changed his life. It changed his career.”
