2008 PITTSBURGH -- A local doctor who first issued a groundbreaking advisory for his staff to limit their cell phone usage is making preparations for an in-depth study.Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and UMPC Cancer Centers, plans to develop a research project focusing on long term cell phone users.Herberman said he has become aware of the growing body of literature linking cell phone usage to possible adverse health effects, including cancer.Channel 4 Action News Anchor Sally Wiggin first reported on Dr. Herberman’s concerns.Although the evidence is still controversial, Herberman advocates that his employees try to limit their cell phone usage. Many of the studies Herberman has examined tend to rely on users' recollections about their cell phone habits. Now UPMC is developing a project that will better identify the long term users that may be at risk.“Dr. Herberman is calling for cell phone companies to release data on the records of cell phones so we can actually do the studies that need to be done,” said environmental oncologist Dr. Devra Lee Davis. “Without that, we can't do the work.”Herberman and his team are currently working on a proposal and securing funding.
