South Side Police Station Move Irks Residents

Residents, Community Council Seek Public Hearing

POSTED: 11:36 am EDT July 26, 2008

Some South Side residents are at odds with the mayor's plans to move a police station.

Pittsburgh's South Side is a popular weekend destination with crowds filling restaurants bars and shops -- but neighbors have some concerns.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has announced he plans to move the Zone 3 police station from the South Side to the Allentown hilltop area, about two miles away from where the station sits now.

The mayor wants to increase police presence in the South Side after a number of recent shootings. Business people look forward to having the police station close by.

Residents on the South Side, where thousands of people come to socialize, said they are worried that crime and rowdiness will increase with the main office -- a little further away.

Joe Bielecki, a member of the South Side Community Council, said his phone has rung nonstop with calls from neighbors angry about the police station move.

Bielecki wants the city to hold a public meeting to get input from residents and business owners.
