PITTSBURGH -- Pennsylvania took a step to help local communities battle sewage overflows Thursday.During times of heavy rain or snow many sewage systems overflow in the Pittsburgh region. The sewage overflow usually ends up in Pittsburgh rivers. The Department of Environmental Protection handed out a $2 million grant to Three Rivers Wet Weather aimed at helping to regionalize the Allegheny County sewage systems.
"We don't need to turn everything into one regionalized hooked-up system," said Cathy Curran Myers of the DEP. "But we do need to manage it as though it's all one system."Currently, Allegheny County is facing a $3 billion project of overhauling its sewage system.
