Burned Flags, Anti-American Writing Found In Hempfield Veterans' CemeteryAmerican Flags Burned At Military Gravesites In Westmoreland CountyPOSTED: 12:51 pm EDT July 16,
2008 HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- State police believe some people are so angry with the current state of the country that they took their frustrations out on a veterans' cemetery in Westmoreland County.Burned flags, broken holders and anti-American writing now litter the Hillview Cemetery in Hempfield Township, WTAE Channel 4's Jennifer Miele reported. The cemetery provides gravesites for military families who can’t afford them."Very sad, very upset, angry, probably all the above feelings," cemetery volunteer Sandy Trustee said. "It's just too bad we have to worry about things like this in this day and age."Dozens of small American flags that once marked those graves have been reduced to charred remains while a larger flag was turned upside down on a pole, police said.A cryptic note that looks to spell out "anarchy" was scribbled near the cemetery office building with the sharp edge of a broken flag holder."Damage to the families who have to come out and see that their child or husband or wife, father or grandfather doesn't have their military flag showing that they did volunteer for our country is very sad. That's a lot of damage," Trustee said.Local American Legion posts and VFWs will cover the cost of the flags, Miele reported.Police have not identified any suspects.
