St. Vincent Readies For 42nd Steelers Training Camp

It will not be long before the Pittsburgh Steelers are back at training camp, and thousands of fans will be there, too. The first open practice will be held July 28.

St. Vincent College invited the media to campus this week to talk about the game plan for Camp Tomlin, and Channel 4 Action News reporter Jennifer Miele was there.

This year the fans will be able to buy new merchandise from the college bookstore.

"We have a few more things that have the Terrible Towel theme to it in memory of Myron Cope -- some Terrible Towel pillows, beach towels and T-shirts, and I think those will be a real big hit with the fans," said bookstore manager, the Rev. Anthony Grossi.

The practice field is also expected to be a hit with the players.

"The Steelers start right after graduation, grooming, fertilizing and mowing it to get it looking the way it does now," said Larry Hendrick, who is the director of facility management at the college. "It's really looking good. They'll put a lot of good work into it the last couple weeks, especially."

Before his first season as head coach, Mike Tomlin did not make any changes to Steelers training camp last year. He said he wanted to experience it first and then fine-tune it accordingly.

It turns out there is only one thing Tomlin asked for: some plain bread to have a sandwich on.

"Coach Tomlin, I think, knows a good thing when he sees it, and he has been caring for the traditions here," college President Jim Towey said.

Campus security is asking visitors to use the Route 30 entrance, where security will direct fans to field parking and stadium seating.
