Pat Mascarello, 65, was on her way to Community Market, a grocery store, in Lower Burrell when she felt someone tug at her purse.

"At first I thought it was someone I knew who was trying to get my attention. Then I felt a strong tug," Mascarello said. "That's what scared me. I thought this isn't somebody I know."

Police say 21-year-old Terry Roth of Lower Burrell, and 18-year-old Frank Gregus of Sharpsburg, drove up alongside Mascarello Saturday morning at Hillcrest Shopping Center and mugged her.

One of the men grabbed Mascarello's purse, but she would not let go.

"I didn't want to give that purse up. There's a lot in that purse," said Mascarello.

The struggle continued. Police say the men dragged her more than three parking spaces, or 20 feet, until Mascarello finally gave up. Mascarello said she didn't want to let go because she had some of her most valuable possessions in her purse.

Witnesses called 911 and gave police a description of the muggers' car. Shortly after, police found the car and one of the men in the woods burning everything inside Mascarello's purse that was not cash.

Mascarello says she lost her credit cards, license, and hundreds of dollars worth of restaurant gift cards. Community Market has decided to give her a new gift card for their store, so her next trip to the store will be more pleasant.

While Mascarello is badly bruised on her elbows and knees and a swollen eye from the attack, she was not seriously injured.

The men are charged with robbery, assault and theft.
