Contracts for the Allegheny County Port Authority drivers expire at midnight Monday, but service will not be affected for the thousands of people who depend on public transit.

Representatives of the Port Authority and Local 85 of the Amalgamated Transit Union have not been able to work out a new contract.

The authority said it needs union concessions as it tries to cut costs. The union said costs can be reduced in other ways.

The next step in the negotiation process calls for the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board to appoint a neutral fact finder, followed by more discussions.

A Port Authority spokeswoman said that there will be no impact on service for at least the next two months during the fact-finding process.
