Pittsburgh Man Accused In Postal Worker's Shooting

Young North Side Man Charged With Robbery

An 18-year-old man was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting of a postal worker delivering mail on the North Side.

Terry Shields of the North Side was arrested by the Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force this morning.

On March 26, 49-year-old John Zeis was shot in the hand on North Taylor Avenue. Police said Shields and another man had approached him to demand money, and when the letter carrier ran away, he was shot.

"He was emptying a mailbox when he was confronted," said Pittsburgh police Lt. Kevin Kraus. "He took off running. We believe he ran a considerable distance before he was shot in the hand."

Police said the two men ran down Palo Alto Street toward West Park.

Shields is charged with robbery and criminal conspiracy. Police have not said if they think he was the gunman, and they also have not said whether they've been able to identify the second suspect.

While the mailman's injuries were not serious, the case will be prosecuted by the U.S. attorney's office because shooting a mail carrier is a federal crime.
