Forbes Avenue Fire Leaves Hundreds Powerless

Explosion Lifted Manhole Cover

An explosion and electrical fire beneath Forbes Avenue blew the cover off a manhole in the Squirrel Hill business district early Monday, WTAE's Emily Ryan reported.

The incident at 3:15 a.m. left about 300 residential and business Duquesne Light customers without power.

A utility crew pumped water out of the sewer, which contains a 4,000-volt line that feeds three transformers between Shady and Murray avenues. Traffic flow was limited during the morning hours.

There were no injuries. A store along Forbes was reportedly damaged.
