Crime Response: Pittsburgh To Enforce Underage Curfew

Recent Shootings Factor Into Police Chief's Decision

Following a recent rash of shootings in and around the city, Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper on Friday said a curfew for anyone under the age of 18 will be strictly enforced.

The curfew will begin at 11 p.m. during the week. It will be pushed back to midnight during the weekend.

Harper said patrols would also be increased in Oakland and Mount Washington -- where three people have been killed and eight wounded in the last week -- as well as Beltzhoover, Allentown and St. Clair Village.

About a dozen officers will be put on overtime as part of this new police response to the violence, WTAE Channel 4's Janelle Hall reported.

"I don't want the public to be alarmed if they see our officers engaging in anyone under the age of 18 that's out past the curfew hours," Harper said.

Early Friday morning, shots were fired outside the McDonald's restaurant on Forbes Avenue in Oakland. Police said a 21-year-old man from the North Side was shot in the chest and a 22-year-old man from Oakland was shot in the back.

Both were rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical and serious conditions.

"We will have increased foot patrols," said assistant chief Paul Donaldson of the Pittsburgh Police Department. "We will have two-officer teams. We will have a Pittsburgh police officer teamed up with a University of Pittsburgh police officer."

Early Thursday morning in Mount Washington, a fight broke out among several people at Sonny's Place on Shiloh Street, and shots were fired, police said.

Brandon Alton, 23, of the Arlington neighborhood, was hit in the upper torso and was taken to UPMC Mercy hospital, where he later died.

On Sunday, someone fired on a group of teens sitting on the front porch of a home in Mount Washington.

Raymond Reese, 15, died after being hit in the chest. Jesse Robinson, 16, was paralyzed. A trust fund has been set up at the Mount Washington PNC Bank on Shiloh Street.
