A 10-month-old girl found bleeding from the nose and ear at a day care in Garfield was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Friday afternoon.

On Saturday, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner ruled Marcia Poston's death a homicide, saying she died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Police said a 7-year-old girl who was in the same room with the child at the day care admitted she picked up Marcia and dropped her at least twice. Police say the girl cannot face charges but may be placed in foster care.

According to police, a woman operating Bray's Family Day Care on Dearborn Street went upstairs with one child to change a diaper, officials said, leaving the 10-month-old downstairs with four other children.

When she returned, she said the baby was bleeding, so she called 911. Paramedics rushed the girl to Children's, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Pittsburgh paramedics said they received a call about the child at about noon Friday saying that the infant was injured and unresponsive.

Latasha Williams, Marcia's cousin, said the family is devastated.

"My aunt Rhonda has been through a lot right now. I couldn't imagine finding out one of my children is dead. I couldn't imagine," Williams said.

Officials said the day care owner was not at the home at the time of the incident. Instead, they said a 20-year-old woman was caring for the children.

"I just thought it was traumatic, shocking, you know? Because it's a well-run business. Parents are always dropping their kids off. It was never a problem in the neighborhood," Garfield resident Chad Jenkins said.
