Now might be a great time to shop around for car insurance.

Several companies are offering lower rates, and savvy customers could save hundreds of dollars a year.

Aside from staying out of car accidents and not getting speeding tickets, Call 4 Action found several ways to trim big bucks off your insurance bill, and many who qualify might not even realize it.

At moments like this with gas prices so high, many drivers have happy they have good car insurance, but most people aren’t happy at the price they pay.

Oakmont insurance agent Tom Dinnin said these days, some of the most substantial savings are going to drivers with not just good driving records but good credit. They can find the deals if they're willing to shop around.

"And most of the studies have found that credit shows a couple of things," said Dinnin. "One, those people are less likely to turn in a small claim."

And two, Dinnin said, that they're less likely to switch insurance companies.

But that's not the only way to trim your premium.

Instead of having a $250 deductible for accidents and other problems, consider raising it to $500. You could save an extra 10 percent a year.

If you have a teen driver in the house, driver's education isn't the only discount out there. As it turns out, if your child is a "B" student or better, many insurance companies will offer even more money off your bill.

Finally, if you can afford it, pay your entire insurance premium up front.

"We have a number a number of companies that will charge $5, $7, even upwards of $10 per payment," said Dinnin.

Another way to trim your bill is by carpooling. If you drive fewer miles to work each week, you could also be in line for a discount.

But do remember, when you're picking car insurance companies, cheaper is not always better.
