"For a first-time mom, Pumpkin is doing very well," said zoo curator Henry Kacprzyk. "She is very protective of her brood and hides the babies from keepers are who watching to make sure everything is OK."

Zoo officials said keepers noticed in December that Pumpkin and Patch, the zoo's resident male, were breeding. In March, they noticed that Pumpkin was pregnant and within three months, she had her babies.

"Their gestation is about three months, so we anticipated Pumpkin giving birth in late April or early May," said Kacprzyk .
