PITTSBURGH -- A SWAT team was called to a house where a man was ambushed by two intruders and forced inside at gunpoint early Thursday evening in Homewood, Pittsburgh police said.Billy Burke, 71, arrived at his home on Fleury Way at about 5:20 p.m. and was forced inside by two men who were hiding behind a fence with a handgun, police said. The men -- identified by police as Mark Daniels, 29, and Melvin Jones, 28 -- pistol-whipped Burke and demanded to know where he kept his safe, police said.
Burke's 19-year-old daughter called 911 for help, and SWAT officials said they saw one of the men run from the house when they arrived. After a short foot chase, the man was caught after a Taser gun was deployed, police said. Burke and his daughter were able to escape the home, leaving the second man inside by himself, police said. The man barricaded himself inside the residence, and a negotiator was called to help defuse the situation, police said. The man surrendered without incident just before 6 p.m., police said, but they said the weapon has not been recovered.Burke suffered a deep laceration over his left eye. He was taken to a local hospital by private means, officials said. Both suspects are being held in the Allegheny County Jail. It's unclear what charges they may face.
