Bride, Groom Hit With New Charges In Ross Hotel Brawl

UPDATED: 6:21 pm EDT May 9, 2008

More assault charges have been filed against a newly married couple whom police say brawled with one another, then members of another wedding party, in a Ross Township hotel last month.

Already charged with simple assault, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, David and Christa Wielechowski were hit with three new counts of assault on Friday, in connection with their wild night at the Holiday Inn on McKnight Road.

Four people have come forward, filing charges against the Wielechowskis.

One man said he was kicked so hard in the groin by David Wielechowski, who he said pushed and punched a woman, that he now needs surgery.

"This is an outrage," said Christa Wielechowski, who is also charged with public intoxication, as she left the courtroom.

Both the 32-year-old dentist and his 25-year-old wife have maintained that the controversial April 26 incident didn't happen like police claim it did.

According to the police complaint, the husband "used a karate-style kick with his leg to kick Christa, knocking her to the floor" on the seventh level of the hotel.

Two men heard the commotion and got physically involved with the groom, but the new bride began attacking her would-be rescuers, police said.

"As they were being attacked, other members of the party attempted to assist them and try to restrain the couple that was fighting with them," said Ross police Patrolman Jim Fitch.

Police said the brawl spilled into the elevator and eventually down to the lobby, where the Wielechowskis were arrested by responding officers.

Earlier this week, the Wielechowskis held a news conference to tell their side of the story, saying that they were the real victims.

David Wielechowski said that he was carrying six-packs of beer and having trouble finding the couple's room. He began arguing with his wife, who he said had also been drinking and was a little tipsy.

According to David Wielechowski, the bride jokingly stuck her rear end out and told him to "kiss my butt," so the new husband gently kicked her in the backside, and she tripped on her wedding dress and fell.

Christa Wielechowski, the former Christa Vattimo, has said that her husband did not start a fight with her or anyone else that night. She wants to know why charges have only been filed against them, and not the other people involved.

Christa Wielechowski's attorney, Mike Worgul, said the timing of the new charges on Friday was "surprising and curious" because it happened after the Wielechowskis' televised news conference.

"One might wonder why the charges were not filed in the original complaint when the original statements from the witnesses were more fresh in their respective minds," Worgul said in a written statement.

The Wielechowskis are free on bond as they await a preliminary hearing on May 28.
