LATROBE, Pa. -- Union workers from Latrobe Specialty Steel Co. have been off the job at the plant on Latrobe Street for seven weeks, and Mayor Tom Marflak says enough is enough.Marflak hopes U.S. Rep. John Murtha, who delivered millions of dollars in public funds to the plant in 2005 for an expansion, will step in and help both sides reach a resolution."With the power to bring the money in, I think he should also have the ability to put some terms and conditions on it," Marflak said. "Don't allow people to be on strike. Maybe bring both parties together, and hammer out a fair and equitable contract for everybody."
About 350 members of United Steelworkers Local 1537 went on strike in May over the company's three-year contract proposal. Later, they protested management's plan to use temporary workers.Earlier this month, after making several new contract offers, the company locked the workers out.Union members oppose the company's offer to increase bonuses while freezing hourly wages and cost-of-living adjustments during the three-year contract. The company has offered a $6,000 bonus this year and $5,000 bonuses over the next two years.
