According to police, three men wearing straw hats and gloves and dressed in dark suits shot out the windows of the Golden Dawn grocery store on Freeport Road before robbing the National City Bank on Freeport Street, in the Parnassus section of town.

According to police, the men shot out the windows of the Golden Dawn grocery store on Freeport Road before robbing the National City Bank on Freeport Street, in the Parnassus section of town.

Police said the shooting was likely a diversion, because the robbers figured police would be responding to that call while they hit the bank.

"I see glass shattering," said witness Jeff Harless. "I see his arm stuck out, bang bang, two more shots, and I see him running."

Police said they found pieces of clothing in the parking lot they believe the robbers left behind.

"There were customers going in and out of the store, several eyewitnesses to it," said Chief Charles Korman of the New Kensington Police Department. "Fortunately, nobody was hurt."

Witnesses told police they saw the robbers being picked up by a gray or silver sport utility vehicle. That same description fits the SUV the suspects left the bank in.

Police surrounded a nearby house shortly after the bank robbery, thinking the men were inside, but no one was apprehended.

Bank surveillance images released by the FBI show one robber wearing a mask styled after the "Scream" movie series, and another with a nylon covering on his head.

"As far as I know, it's the first time in 22 years I've ever heard of someone using a straw hat in a bank robbery," said FBI agent David Hedges.

What appears to be a good amount of cash is seen being packed into a duffel bag in another surveillance photo.

The bank has not said how much money was taken.

The FBI, Westmoreland County detectives and New Kensington police are all working on the case.
