One of three suspects in the deaths of a former Carroll Township police chief and his wife was ordered to stand trial after a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

Gregory Monya Carpenter, 52, of Charleroi, is charged with conspiracy to commit homicide. His trial date has not been set.

Police said Howard and Nancy Springer were victims of a plot last month to rob and kill them at their house on Highland Road, where they operated a home-based precious metals business.

Gerald Szakal Jr., 25, of Rostraver, is accused of shooting the couple to death. He was ordered last month to stand trial on charges of homicide, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, tampering with evidence and robbery.

Also ordered last month to stand trial was Justin Welch, 21, of Charleroi, charged with conspiracy to commit homicide, receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Police are still looking for Tecko Dwayne Tartt, 21, formerly of Donora. The specific charge or charges against him are not known.
