DEP To Hold Discussion On Plans For Route 65 Landslide SitePOSTED: 3:37 pm EDT March 13,
2008 KILBUCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a public meeting on Tuesday in the Avonworth High School auditorium on Josephs Lane to discuss Wal-Mart's proposed plan to permanently stabilize its construction site in Kilbuck Township along Route 65, where a landslide occurred in September 2006.Part of the site gave way during development on Sept. 19, 2006, sending some 500,000 cubic yards of dirt and debris onto the highway below. The highway is a major artery to Pittsburgh's western suburbs and was closed for two weeks.Wal-Mart said it plans to return the hillside to a "pre-development, natural sloping condition that includes trees and vegetation."Tuesday's meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m., will allow township residents to see Wal-Mart's proposed plan and to discuss erosion and sedimentation controls and activities that are expected to begin in early April.According to the DEP, the land continues to move about three-eighths of an inch every week."All along, it has been a tough balance between the need to stabilize the site as quickly as possible but also to make sure that we have a site or plan that once it's implemented is going to result in permanent stability," said Helen Humphreys of the DEP.
