Animal officers in Grindstone, Fayette County, are investigating what they said is one of the worst cases of animal abuse they've ever seen.

Authorities were called after smoke was seen coming from a wooded area off Tippecanoe Road at about 6 a.m. on Thursday. When crews arrived at the source of the smoke, they discovered three badly burned dogs hanging dead in a tree.

"It's crazy," said Rob Maule of the Fayette County Humane Society. "It's ridiculous. It's inhumane."

"I cried," said Theresa Lundren of the Humane Society. "I cried when I first seen this. But then I got strong, because I want to get who done this. I believe this dog might have been used as a satanic ritual, and it might have been alive when they did this."

Lundren believes that because investigators found a pentagram a few feet away from the dogs. Police said they don't know how long the symbol had been there or whether it was related to the dogs' deaths.

"I'll struggle until the day I die to try to take care of these animals and find out who is abusing them and who is doing what to them," said Maule.

Police said they believe it took more than one person to get the roughly 80-pound dogs into the tree. They continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact authorities.
