County Drink Tax Affecting Liquor Suppliers, Bars, Restaurants

The latest numbers show the Allegheny County drink tax isn't just hurting restaurants and bars, but liquor suppliers as well.

WTAE Channel 4's news exchange partners at the Tribune-Review report liquor license holders bought less alcohol in January compared to the same month last year. It was about a 3.5 percent drop.

The state Liquor Control Board said that bucks the statewide trend where sales were up 4 percent in January.

The tax, which went into effect on Jan. 1, is on all poured alcoholic drinks. Preliminary figures for January show the county collected about $1.2 million. That also includes money brought in from the new $2 a day car rental tax.
