New Plan Could Nix Drink Tax

Proposal Would Tax Nonprofits For Millions

One day after the first drink tax payments were due, there was more discussion about getting rid of the tax altogether.

The County Council talked about a plan Tuesday night that would throw the drink tax out in favor of a plan to collect a fee from larger nonprofit organizations -- based on the square footage of the building the groups occupy.

Proponents said the plan could generate millions of dollars to reduce or eliminate the drink tax.

The proposed bill, however, wasn't voted on during the meeting.

The 10-percent tax on alcoholic drinks was approved last year to help pay for the county's $30 million subsidy of the port authority.
