PITTSBURGH -- The final piece of the Tyrannosaurus Rex exhibit at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History is about to be placed, meaning the exhibit could soon be open to the public. The T-Rex bones at the museum are a mold of the first ever found."It is the original specimen that was dug out of the ground in Montana, and when the scientists found it, they said, 'My goodness. We found a new kind of dinosaur,'" said paleontologist Chris Beard. '"'Lets name it T-Rex.' So, literally, ours is the gold standard to which all other T- Rexes need to be measured."
The bones have been on display at the museum since the 1940s but when the new exhibit opens, the T-Rex will look a lot different. The dinosaur, as you will see it for the first time, will be displayed in an encounter with a second T-Rex found just a few years back close to where the original was discovered."It's possible these two T- Rexes may have actually known each other in life," said Beard. And together, scientists said, after 60 years, the exhibit will offer a more accurate picture of the "tyrant lizard king."Since the T-Rex first went on display, there have been a number of scientific discoveries that make this dinosaur look much different than it has for decades."Our original T-Rex was mounted standing upright, like Godzilla," said Beard. "His tail on the ground like a kangaroo. What we're found out in the intervening decades is that T-Rex didn't walk around that way."Instead, scientists now believe the T-Rex walked with its tail off the ground, with its torso parallel to the ground, and its head has a slightly different shape. The new T-Rex exhibit at the Museum of Natural History is set to open in June.
