Pittsburgh Stanwix Street Residents Upset Over North Shore Connector Debris

Pittsburgh's North Shore Connector project is an inconvenience for downtown drivers who normally use Stanwix Street, but imagine living on the street.

Residents at 625 Stanwix Street said they live with the sounds of jackhammers and arrive home to a muddy mess.

"This is dirt," said Stanwix Street resident Sol Gross. "Look at that mud. Do you have that in your house? Nobody has that in their house. Why should they bring their mud into my house?"

But once all of the construction is finished, commuters will be able to take the Connector from Stanwix Street across the river to the North Shore.

Some tenants along the street are asking the Port Authority to clean up the mess.

"It's winter time right now, and we can't keep up on the housekeeping as much as we would," said project engineer Winston Simmonds.

But mud is only part of the mess. Resident complaints range from dust seeping into the building's air vents to gas and water line breaks. One resident said their building has had two gas lines broken since the construction began and a water line, too.

The Port Authority said it's working to improve the situation. Next month, they will reopen the northern half of Stanwix Street between Fort Duquesne Boulevard and the parking garage. But with four years of work left, residents expect the muddy mess to continue.
