Ex-Pittsburgh Councilwoman Twanda Carlisle Gets Jail Time

POSTED: 11:23 am EST February 4, 2008
UPDATED: 5:26 pm EST February 4, 2008

Former Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Twanda Carlisle was sentenced to one to two years in prison on corruption and ethics charges on Monday morning.

Allegheny County Judge John Zottola also ordered Carlisle to pay restitution. According to defense attorney Patrick Thomassey, Carlisle has already made the restitution.

Carlisle conspired to pay three friends city money for meaningless consulting work, only to have them kick back $43,000 to her.

Carlisle told the judge on Monday that she was sorry for any misdoing. She said, "Maybe I did do something wrong. But I was a councilwoman, staff and the bookkeeper. The error was in the bookkeeping. It was not malicious."

"She's taking responsibility, no question about that," said Thomassey. "In my experience with these kinds of situations, there's all kinds of people taking care of these accounts, but there's no question she made a mistake, and she's going to pay for it."

Carlisle resigned Nov. 13 after pleading no contest to the charges. She will report to jail to serve her sentence on March 10.
