North Braddock Man Settles For $100,000 After Police Taser At Home

UPDATED: 5:59 pm EDT August 22, 2008

North Braddock will pay $100,000 to a man who sued after local police officers allegedly shot him with a Taser while he slept on the couch at home.

The borough and its insurance carrier agreed on Friday to pay Shawn Hicks to settle the lawsuit stemming from the incident on July 28, 2007.

District Attorney Stephen Zappala determined that Officers Gerard Kraly and Lukas Laeuricia didn't commit a crime against Hicks.

Police said they came to Hicks' home on Stokes Avenue at about 2:45 a.m. because of a silent alarm.

Hicks said the officers stunned him again after he woke up and showed identification to prove he lived there.

"After they Tasered me, I told them who I was," Hicks said in a September interview with WTAE Channel 4 Action News. "They Tasered me again. I had fell to the ground, and they sustained the Taser."

Hicks was taken to the police station and was let go after officers verified who he was.
