Pitt Study Says Social Agencies Not Ready For New Casino

A University of Pittsburgh study says the region's social service agencies aren't prepared for the city's new slot machine casino.

Pitt's School of Social Work surveyed 137 agencies that deal with addiction-related issues.

Pitt said 75 percent of the agencies don't treat problem gamblers and most feel it is not an issue for their agency.

Fewer than one-third of the agencies are familiar with public awareness campaigns on problem gamblers.

The study said the state's plan to spend $1.5 million to address gambling-related disorders may not be enough.

The study said that because gambling could generate $3 billion a year for the state, it should allocate more than the $1.5 million now directed to deal with problem gambling.

Pittsburgh's Majestic Star Casino is scheduled to open on Pittsburgh's North Shore in May 2009.
