Penich Murder Suspect's Confession Unsealed

Snider Says Killing Was Accidental

POSTED: 9:17 a.m. EDT June 4, 2002

A former Marshall University student told police she did not mean to kill another student in Korea when she pushed the girl and then dropped her, causing her to fall and hit her head twice, according to newly released documents.

Kenzi Snider, 20, a former education major at Marshall, is accused of murdering University of Pittsburgh student Jamie Lynn Penich in a motel room in Seoul, South Korea, on March 18, 2001, while the two were studying abroad.

Snider was arrested Feb. 28 in Huntington by federal officers and is being held in the South Central Regional Jail in Charleston.

A federal magistrate on Friday ordered documents filed by the South Korean government to be unsealed so Snider's attorneys could prepare her defense. Magistrate Judge Maurice Taylor Jr. also postponed an extradition hearing to July 30.

In a written confession signed by Snider, she said she did not mean to hurt her friend. She said she became angry and hurt when Penich tried to unbutton her pants after the two kissed and groped in a hotel bathroom, according to the statement. The two had just returned from a night out with other students on a sightseeing trip.

The statement said Snider wanted to say no, but could not make the words come out. Instead, Snider said she hit Penich, who then fell into the bathtub and hit her head.

Snider said she carried Penich out of the bathroom, tripped on the doorway between the bathroom and bedroom and dropped Penich on her head. She then hit Penich again, according to the statement.

An FBI agent asked Snider if she and Penich ever had a relationship before that night. Snider said no.

"We were just friends," the statement read. "I didn't know she felt that way."

The agent asked Snider if she knew she killed Penich before she left the motel room. Snider said she did not. She said she just stared at her friend who was covered by a jacket and knew she was not angry anymore, according to the statement.

In an investigation report filed by the FBI agents, which also was unsealed, one agent said Snider said she lost control because a member of her immediate family had just admitted to being homosexual and that the news had been traumatizing.

The investigation report said Snider said she did not want to be like that family member.

Snider's mother, Heath Bozonie, has said her daughter is innocent. Penich's parents say they want Snider to face the death penalty in South Korea.
