A Fox Chapel mother who asked her children to create something unique for friends and family during the holiday a few years ago never thought one of her kids would have taken things so far.

Lani Lazzari, 13, is your typical teenager, except for the fact that she runs her own business.

Inside a small room in her parents' basement, Lani created Simple Sugars, her own skin care line.

"I'd like to be able to pay for college tuition," she said. "At least help pay for that or maybe even high school. I did some research, all different places -- mostly online -- about oils that are good for your skin. I have a foot scrub, a facial scrub and a body scrub."

Lani's mother encouraged the idea, which uses a lot of sugars.

Sugar is the main exfoliate in Lani's scrubs, which include a mixture of oils to leave the skin soft.

Cherry kernel, soy oil and rice bran are all used in the mixture.

"You just take a little bit of scrub, put it in the palm of your hand and add a little bit of water to let the sugar dissolve and then just rub like you're using soap," said Lani. "All over your hands, back. Really good for your nails."

The eighth-grader said the ingredients are all natural. She uses vitamin E and C, citric acid and vanilla bean paste.

Lani said she makes every scrub by hand.

And Simple Sugars are selling.

UPMC recently placed an order for 2,400 foot scrubs.

Lani said not only does she want her business to be able to pay for her college, but she wants it to be a unique working experience, too.

"I'd definitely like Simple Sugars to be one of the best companies in the world for women to work for," Lani said.

Prices range from $7.50 for a single jar to $45 for gift baskets.
