Mount Washington residents are demanding help from the Pittsburgh City Council to stop illegal hunting in a city park near them.

The 260-acre Grandview Scenic Byway Park officially became a Pittsburgh city park two years ago, which means it's illegal to hunt inside it, but residents said hunters are still killing deer there with bows and arrows.

With more people discovering the park, residents said it's time to stop the hunting before someone gets hurt.

"There's kids running around here and everything," said Mount Washington resident Dave Weaver. "This guy, he comes out of the woods at night. I don't know if you're allowed in the woods at night. I don't think you are. But he told me personally he killed, like, 15 deer in one year up here."

"If you did this in Schenley Park or any of the inner-city parks, there would be a hullabaloo that you would never get over," said Mount Washington resident Ed Thomas. "But up here, it's, like, sight unseen. They've been getting away with it for so long. But now, I think we're on the right path."

Residents want the city to post "No Hunting" signs on the property.

"Matter of fact, our neighborhood children have a small clubhouse down in the woods somewhere," said Thomas. "I don't know where it is, but it's just a danger. You know, my feelings are before someone gets hurt or killed, we need to stop it. Like I said, it's like any other park in the city."

One hunter already has been cited and fined $1,300 for hunting in the park.
