Brass veteran cemetery markers have been disappearing from several Lawrence County cemeteries for two weeks now. But Sunday, state police said they have finally made arrests.

Matthew Russick and Jessica Gustaitis were in custody Sunday on numerous charges including theft and vandalism, said police.

Police said the two pulled the markers from the ground and broke off the stakes.

They said the alleged thieves received $1 for each of the stakes at local recycling centers.

The two allegedly stole at least 238 emblems from Saint Vitus, Saint Mary's Graceland and Oak Park cemeteries.

The total number of stolen markers will not be known until the snow melts, said cemetery officials.

Rusick and Gustaitis were in the Lawrence County Jail Sunday on $20,000 bond.
