Pittsburgh Casino Design Hearing Pushed Back

POSTED: 8:16 am EST December 7, 2007

The Pittsburgh Planning Commission has delayed a public hearing on design changes to the city's North Shore casino after a nonprofit group said the commission had failed to give the required 21-day notice of the meeting.

The Pittsburgh Riverlife Task Force requested the delay because developers haven't submitted new exterior designs for the $450 million Majestic Star Casino and 12-story parking garage.

The commission agreed to postpone the meeting scheduled for Dec. 11 until Jan. 15. However, groundbreaking on the casino is still planned for Tuesday.

City planners balked at approving the plans unless decorative screening is installed on the garage, which is twice as tall as the casino.

Planners say the development could mar the city's skyline. The Riverlife group says that impact can't be gauged without design drawings.
