North Shore Casino, Hill District Arena Still Facing ObstaclesPOSTED: 4:49 pm EST November 27,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- Two huge Pittsburgh projects worth millions have big hurdles to face.Eighteen days ago, PITG Gaming's Don Barden, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato said they had a deal to make sure a 3,800-space parking garage wouldn't tower over the Majestic Star Casino and take away from showcasing the North Shore."They'll see something much more attractive than Heinz Field," Barden said during that meeting. But now, PITG Gaming said plans and drawings of the design solution aren't ready yet."We will be presenting you with a building in two weeks that has the garage cladding in place over the entire garage, including the south side facing onto the river," said Deborah Rouse of PITG Gaming. The old animation doesn't show the garage, which will now stand taller than the casino itself. A decorative screening and facade are to smooth the differences."Concerns have been expressed in the community about the scale of the garage and the fact that the garage overwhelms the casino," said Lisa Schroeder of the Riverlife Task Force. "So, we're looking forward to solutions to go back to the original of the project."The commission also heard an update on plans for the new arena planned for the Hill District. But the One Hill Coalition said there's still no community benefits agreement for the Hill District."And we want to make sure we have that agreement before city planning approves the master plan for the arena," said Carl Redwood of OHC. "And if that doesn't happen, we plan to oppose the arena using everything we can to try to stop the development until there's a community benefits agreement."
