Action News Extra: Survival Guide For Parents With Teens For Internet, Texting Safety

POSTED: 1:14 pm EST November 22, 2007

  • Visit these Web sites and educate yourself: www.missingkids.com and www.netsmartz.org.

  • Keep the computer in an open area in the home.

  • Talk to your children if they use chat or e-mail about never meeting a person whom they have met online.

  • If your child has a MySpace account or an account on another social networking site, parents create your own account and have your child add you as a buddy so that you can see who your children are talking to online and who their friends are. Also keep your child's profile private.

  • Internet accounts should be in the parent's name with parents controlling passwords and using blocking and or filtering devices.

  • Use common sense with your children. If their behavior changes in any way, talk to them about Internet safety and see if something is making them feel scared or uncomfortable.

  • Do not have Web cams available for your children to use.

  • For a list of computer acronyms, go to www.MissingKids.com.
