Year After Devastating Fire, McKees Rocks Bakery Back In Action

A year ago today, a family lost their McKees Rocks business in a Thanksgiving fire.

It was a devastating experience for the owners of the Jenny Lee Bakery on Island Avenue, who made most of their profits during the holiday season.

But those owners have bounced back, and the machines are humming once again.

"You can't explain it," said bakery owner Scott Baker. "Pride. Satisfaction. I'm humbled to see the people coming back."

But Baker said it wasn't easy. Jenny Lee was closed for about four months and even now, they're still recovering from the blaze. Some parts of the bakery are still being reconstructed.

"It confirmed the people that work for us and their loyalty," Baker said. "It confirmed our place in the community. It confirmed our passion for what we do."

It's a passion that's flourished for 69 years now.

"I don't think there's any storyline that's been written yet," said Baker. "I'd like to see it go on for another 69 years."

Jenny Lee Bakery is not up to full strength yet. They were at 85 employees at the time of the fire. They've only got 40 right now.
