An overnight fire at an apartment building forced several residents out of their homes Tuesday.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. at the Abigail Garden Apartments on Pine Drive in New Stanton, Westmoreland County.

Ten fire companies fought for two hours to put out the flames, which started in the basement and extended to the second and third floors of the building, said Youngblood Assistant Fire Chief Bob Coletta.

Firefighters rescued two people from a third-story balcony.

All residents from 12 different apartments made it out safely but were displaced by the fire, Coletta said. The American Red Cross is assisting some of those individuals while others are staying with family and friends.

"I feel like I'm in a dream, like this isn't even happening," said resident Karla McWilliams, who lost her dog in the blaze. "My Chihuahua. That's all I had. That's like my baby, so I feel really bad."

Two firefighters were treated for exhaustion at area hospitals.

"We had two fireman were injured, transported to local hospitals, because they were exhausted for working so hard," said Assistant Fire Chief Bob Coletta of the Youngwood Fire Department.

Although fire damaged only half of the apartments in this building, smoke damaged all of the apartments, so at this point, no one is allowed back inside their homes yet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
