McKees Rocks is hoping a face-lift for a shopping center and its neighborhood business district will spin a new image.

The community is developing a sense of excitement about what's ahead for the area. It might have had some tough times in the past, but McKees Rocks residents said things are going to change.

The Sto-Rox Marching Band was on hand for the shopping district's revitalization groundbreaking.

"The great people of McKees Rocks, you really represent what this region is all about: hardworking, good people," said Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato.

McKees Rocks community leaders have been working on revitalization plans for years. Its business district is taking on a new name to promote the new image: Chartiers Crossing.

Transforming the McKees Rocks plaza will cost about $12 million. It will be transformed into "the Shoppes at Chartiers Crossing."

Another $8 million is being used to renovate a live-performance theater, to build a cultural center and to revive historic buildings.
