Starting Jan. 1, the base fare on buses and trolleys rose from $1.75 to $2.

It's the first transit fare hike in more than five years.

The Port Authority said a higher fare is necessary to help its revenues keep pace with growing costs, and to help prevent cutting service.

Gas costs have increased by 123 percent since the base fare was raised to its current price of $1.75 in 2002, according to the Port Authority, which cited figures from the U.S. Department of Energy.
