Action News Extra: Bid Low To Win Big In Online 'Limbo' Game

POSTED: 4:11 pm EST November 14, 2007

Plasma televisions, iPhones, Hannah Montana concert tickets and thousands of dollars in cash are just some of the things that are available in a new game -- and Pittsburghers are winning.

WTAE Channel 4 Action News anchor Wendy Bell said the online bidding game called Limbo is sort of like a reverse eBay. The lowest unique bid wins, and the best part is that you pay nothing to play.

Kathy Zanewicz does it. She won $500.

"I don't miss a day, never," Zanewicz said.

So does Robbie Graham. He won $99.99.

"I'd like a big TV," Graham said.

Sheryl Umstead is a player, too.

"When I won the iPod, I was like, 'That cannot be serious,'" Umstead said.

She also won a six-day stay on a private island.

"It's called Necker Island and it's all inclusive," Umstead said.

Stacy Geagan Wagner, Limbo's vice president of marketing, admits the game seems to have a "too-good-to-be-true factor" but she said the explanation is pretty simple.

"We sell advertising, and your eyeballs," she said.

In other words, companies market their products to the players, and the players bid on those products.

Some of those items include PSP, PlayStation 3 and Xbox game consoles.

Geagan Wagner said players have won diamonds for $1, a Porsche for $127, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle for $7 and a Hummer for $36.

While it sounds too good to be true, Bell said there is no spamming, no charges and no telemarketing.

You just go to Limbo.com, find something you like and place a bid.

"All you have to do is enter a number you think no one else will pick," Graham said.

The site offers tips and feedback to let you know how you're doing.

Zanewicz has won all kinds of things, from music to money.

"I tell people, but they don't really get it," she said. "I think that's OK because there's more chances for me to win if they don't play."

Winners don't have to pay the amount of money that they bid on a prize, but they must pay taxes added onto their personal income, because Limbo is a sweepstakes.
